Biography:
Emmeline E. Smith (abt. 1833-1848) was the daughter of James M. Smith of Rutherford Co. and his wife Elizabeth. Emmeline was probably a cousin to Susannah D. Smith (TSS 115). James M. Smith was a cotton farmer and also owned a saw and grist mill. The Midsylvania Female Academy was located five miles southeast of Murfreesboro. Emmeline died in 1848 at the age of fifteen, only a few weeks after her father.
Description:
Emmeline’s large sampler features a number of finely worked motifs. Her linen is of good quality and she had a wide range of silks at her disposal.
