Biography:
Sarah (Sallie) Jane Cotton (1853—1916), who went by the name of Sallie, was the eldest child of William Henry Cotton and Martha Jane Ballard. Her father was a farmer near Leipers Fork, Williamson County. Sallie stitched her marking sampler in 1861 when the Civil War started. In 1877 Sallie married a farmer named George Bartlett Tucker. The couple lived in Dist. 6, just a few miles from the Cotton farm. The Tuckers had five children. Sallie is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Franklin, Williamson County.
Description:
Sallie’s sampler survives in its original frame. She worked the entire bottom half of her sampler in cross stitch over one thread.
