Biography:
Mary Amelia Kennedy (1848-1858) was the first born child of James Kennedy, Jr. and Martha Jane Armstrong. Her grandfather was Rev. James Kennedy, a Presbyterian minister, who came to Knox Co. about 1797 and purchased 274 acres of land on the French Broad River. In 1819 he purchased 170 additional acres of land on Swan Pond Creek. Mary’s father inherited a portion of that land and a mill when her grandfather died in 1826.

According to a note which is pinned to the back of a towel, the “little flax towel homemade and hemmed by my sister Mary Kennedy 1857. She was only 9 years old. Died July 28 before she would have been 10 years Sept.”
