Biography:
Martha Jane Parrotte (1841-bef. Dec. 1878) was the eldest child of Manoah Parrotte and Nancy Casander (Cassandra) Nichols. She was only seven years old when her mother died, possibly from complications of the birth of Martha’s brother Thomas. A year and a half later, her father married Emily Brownen, who gave birth to nine more children. In 1859 Martha married James Wylie Foster, a farmer and a cooper. They had five children.
Description:
Martha’s sampler, stitched in 1855, could have been made at the Cloverdale Seminary on Barton Creek in what is now Vanleer, Dickson County. Martha’s sampler does not resemble the other two samplers documented from that academy, which were worked in 1846 (TSS 112) and 1851 (TSS 148). Perhaps the change in style reflects a new teacher.
