Biography:
Mary Hayden Smith (1823-1896) was the second child of William Smith and Lucy Hayden. William Smith was a farmer in District 12 of Maury Co. near Mount Pleasant. Mary’s mother died in 1836, the same year that Mary made her sampler. Mary and her father raised Lucy Elizabeth Orr, Mary’s niece. Mary lived with her niece until her death. She is buried in the Lawrence Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.
Description:
Mary’s sampler depicts a landscape, complete with trees, a house, and a meandering stream. The sampler is in poor condition, but by comparing it to others in this group we know the original colors would have been intense pinks and greens.
