America Judith Word (1819-1858) was named after her mother, Judith America Johnston. Her father, Thomas H. Word, owned land in the Leipers Fork area as early as 1817. At the age of 15, America traveled to Brandon, Rankin Co., MS, where she married Silas Call Walker. America gave birth to three daughters in Mississippi. America died in 1858 at the age of 39, but she lived long enough to see two of her daughters married.
The horizontal format of this sampler is unusual for Middle Tennessee. America includes the name Franklin, the seat of Williamson County and the likely location of her school, on her sampler.
