Biography:
Mary Saunders Martin (1825-1881) may have been one of six children born to George Winchester Martin, a tanner, and Judith Bradley. Mary wed William Pitt Hickerson, a lawyer, in 1843. The couple moved to Manchester, Coffee Co., where they had five children. Mary died in 1881 and her husband in 1882. Both are buried in the Hickerson-Wooten Cemetery in Manchester, Coffee County.
Description:
Mary’s sampler lacks any text other than her name and the date. Her exuberant motifs include: parrots (2), birds on branches (2), a fruit basket, butterflies (2), a peahen, a peacock, a man, a duck, dogs (3), strawberries (3), roosters (2), and a rabbit.
