Biography:
Martha J. Hale (1839-1899), the daughter of farmer John Hale, grew up to marry another farmer, Joseph W. Smith. The Smith farm was located in Cocke Co. Martha had two children and is buried in the Bell Cemetery in Cocke Co.
Description:
The horizontal orientation of Martha's sampler is unusual. She cleverly included all the numerals by using both the date (1855) and a row of numbers (0, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9). Her name was worked in a cream silk, which blends with the ground fabric.
