Description:
Susan's sampler is known to us only from a slide in the archives at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art, Winston-Salem, NC. Her vertically oriented house sampler is predominantly red and blue. The top line contains Susan's personal information: "Susan Cormack+was+born+dec [illegible]+177[illegible]." Four manuscript alphabets in varying sizes and the numbers 1-15 follow. The bottom portion depicts a two-story, five bay red brick house with two interior chimneys. A fence is on either side of the house. Two free embroidery trees grow behind the fence. A strawberry border encloses the lower section of the sampler. The sampler is in poor condition, sustaining ground fabric loss at the top and bottom.
